Industrial Wastewater Engineering & Treatment Plant Design

Industrial processing demands heavy-duty infrastructure capable of handling harsh, variable trade waste flows. Reliable compliance cannot be achieved with generic equipment; it requires precise, custom-tailored wastewater engineering built around your facility’s specific flow rates, hydraulic limits, and pollutant characteristics.

WASTE WATER TREATMENT ENGINEERING

iH2OM designs, constructs, and commissions complete industrial wastewater treatment plants across Australia. Our engineering team bridges the gap between raw process effluent and strict local environmental standards, delivering rugged, automated systems built for decades of continuous operation.

What Is Wastewater Treatment Engineering?

Wastewater treatment engineering is the discipline of planning, sizing, and constructing mechanical, physical, and chemical infrastructure to process industrial trade waste. It ensures the automated separation of contaminants from water while maintaining target hydraulic flow rates and regulatory compliance.

TREATMENT DESIGN

End-to-End Wastewater Treatment Design and Construction

An efficient system starts with accurate data. At iH2OM, our wastewater treatment design process begins with a meticulous site survey, hydraulic profiling, and a complete analysis of your historical trade waste data.

Whether you are building a greenfield processing plant or upgrading an existing facility under tight footprint constraints, we manage the complete lifecycle:

First, we establish a comprehensive Hydraulic and Load Profile.

Next, we move into detailed Process and Layout Modeling.

This progresses into exact Mechanical and Electrical Design, concluding with seamless On-Site Commissioning.

Our in-house fabrication capabilities mean we construct systems ranging from compact, skid-mounted 1m3/hr treatment packages up to complex, multi-stage 250m3/hr automated industrial plants.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Core Infrastructure Components of Our Wastewater Engineering

Our engineered installations rely on proven physical-chemical and biological separation principles, refined through decades of practical industrial application.

Primary Treatment & High-Efficiency Counter-Current DAF Systems

Primary Treatment & High-Efficiency Counter-Current DAF Systems

For streams high in suspended solids, fats, oils, greases, and insoluble organics, Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is often the most reliable primary separation approach. Our custom counter-current DAF systems are engineered to maximise retention times and air-to-solids contact while minimising physical footprint. Micro-bubbles attach to chemically conditioned flocs, floating them to the surface where an automated scraper removes the sludge blanket.

Sedimentation and grit separation

Secondary & Tertiary Biological Modeling (SBR, MBR, MBBR)

When effluent contains high concentrations of dissolved organic pollutants – measured as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) – physical-chemical separation alone may not meet strict local guidelines. Our team engineers secondary biological systems, utilising advanced modeling software to deploy:

  • Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBR) for variable batch discharges.
  • Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR) for high-load, space-constrained footprints.
  • Membrane Bioreactors (MBR) when ultra-pure tertiary water is required for on-site recycling.

Automated Polymer Make-Up & Chemical Handling Systems

Even the best water chemistry fails without precise delivery. We engineer automated dry and liquid polymer preparation systems, complete with precise metering pumps, inline dilution static mixers, and multi-point dosing manifolds. This setup guarantees optimal chemical ageing and deployment, reducing chemical consumption and eliminating manual handling risks for your operators.

Integrated Wastewater Treatment Expertise

With over 25 years of experience in wastewater treatment design and construction, we focus on primary, secondary, and tertiary treated water. Our design strategies prioritise client needs, desired water quality, energy efficiency, and overall effectiveness.

Primary treatment systems eliminate solids and contaminants from wastewater using physical and chemical methods, enhancing water quality for discharge or further treatment. We specialise in biological processes, including both aerobic and anaerobic methods, to remove organic matter from wastewater.

TECHNOLOGY

Smart Plant Automation: iH2OM REAL TIME™ Telemetry

Modern industrial operations cannot rely on manual, reactive monitoring. That is why our plants feature iH2OM REAL TIME™, our proprietary cloud-based telemetry and automation architecture.

The process functions through an automated sequence: On-Site System Sensors continuously feed data directly to the iH2OM REAL TIME™ PLC Cloud Link, which maintains Continuous 24/7 Monitoring and Alerting across your entire facility.

Through strategically placed sensors, PLC control panels, and cloud links, your plant continuously tracks key process indicators including pH levels, turbidity, flow rates, and chemical tank levels. If any parameter drifts from its setpoint, the system self-corrects dosing rates instantly and alerts our central engineering team. This lets us diagnose and fix issues remotely before they escalate into a trade waste breach.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Engineering Sewage Plant Design of for Industrial Compliance

For larger, isolated industrial complexes, agricultural processing centers, and remote mining camps, municipal sewer connections are often unavailable. iH2OM provides specialised sewage plant design services, delivering fully self-contained, containerised, or civil-constructed domestic waste treatment systems.

These packages integrate primary screening, biological digestion, and UV or chlorine disinfection to output effluent that meets or exceeds local environmental reuse standards.

Our engineering team works directly with your project group to ensure complete alignment with environmental protection policies and local government planning codes. Learn more about our company or view our targeted work for the manufacturing sector.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you integrate a new DAF system into our existing concrete tanks?

Yes. Our wastewater engineering team specialises in retrofitting new, high-efficiency mechanical internals, micro-bubble aeration systems, and automated scraping assemblies into existing concrete footprints or steel tanks. This approach helps lower capital costs.

We engineer turnkey systems across a broad operating spectrum, handling everything from low-volume 1m3/hr industrial batch processing units to large-scale, continuous-flow installations processing up to 250m3/hr.

The system continuously tracks critical discharge parameters like pH and turbidity. If these values move toward your legal discharge limit, the system can automatically adjust chemical dosing or close an actuated reject valve. This diverts non-compliant water to a holding tank and prevents it from entering the municipal sewer.
